Results 26 June- Quick handed Cesar Figueroa knocked Adrian Torres down in the 3rd then followed up with a nice combination. The referee foolishly stopped the fight at 2:56 of round 3. If a fighter could be a World Champ from posing in front of his opponent, Cesar Figueroa would be pound-for-pound champion poser. He's talented and when he throws a punch it's quick and powerful, but this only happens once every 2 minutes or so. Cesar, throw punches!!!!! You've got the skills, just do it more often. In a comical 8 round S.Lightweight bout, awkward dancer Miguel Angel Alvarez took the fight to favored Juan Carlos Morales and won on all three scorecards. The coordination-challenged Alvarez would at times leap two feet into the air while changing from right to left handed. Quite a spectical to watch. But he showed guts and landed the better blows during the exchanges - which were frequent so long as his feet were on the ground. Also, Bantam:4rds Isreal Garcia Wtko3 Elias Garcia; feather:4rds Edson Aguirre W4 Martin Pena; feather:4rds Miguel Munoz W4 Oscar Montiel.
I'm back in Mexico City just in time for an interesting match-up June 26th at the Arena Coliseo. Slick boxing Cesar Figuero 11-0-2(6) is scheduled in a 10 round featherweight bout with solid Adrian Torres 19-9-1(14). Torres has a one punch knockout left hook when he uses it (which unfortunatly he seldom does). Figuero is the favorite and is touted as a hot prospect, but I've seen him rocked more than once by lighter opposition. If Torres will throw the punch I see another prospect falling victim to the Arena Coliseo "House of Upsets".
Pedro Alonso Teran has returned to the gym in Mexico City following his June 12th TKO loss to undefeated Alex Trujillo. Teran's camp arrived late at the weigh-in, allowing Trujillo to come in above the contracted weight - 138 1/2 vs. Teran's 134 1/2. Teran also took the fight on 3 days notice. Not to make excuses, but Teran was not 100%. After veiwing the tape Teran stated he would like a rematch with proper time to prepare and at the weight of 135lbs. Look for the tough Mexican lightweight to make another appearance later this summer on Telemundo.
Last Friday night June 11th on ESPN2 Juan Antonio Lopez, the hard-punching 140 pounder from Dallas, TX. seperated his shoulder in the 1st round and was unable to continue. Juan Carlos Rodriguez picks up the win. Enrique Jupiter outboxed former champ Danny Romero, but had to settle for a draw. Jupiter was effective counter punching the charging Romero. I gave rounds 1 thru 4 to Romero, 5 thru 10 to Jupiter. In the last 25 seconds Romero was off balance and knocked down with a punch, but the referee called it a slip.
Saturday night the 12th,Mexican lightweight Pedro Alonso Teran put up a valient effort against the much larger Alex Trujillo until the 6th, when Terans corner threw in the towel. Things didn't look good in the 1st as Teran (134 1/2) was dropped and battered around the ring by Trujillo (138 3/4). Surviving the 1st 3 rounds, Teran landed some good shots in the 4th and 5th but by the 6th Trujillo caught his second wind and punished the game Teran on the ropes for a standing 8-count. At this point the corner stopped the fight. Teran, who took the fight on 3 days notice, certianly won't be fighting above 135lbs. ever again. In the main event on the card carried by Telemundo, Adan Vargas knocked out Jorge Reyes with a picture perfect shot to the liver in round one. Vargas was defending his NABF Bantam title and now looks set to travel to Thailand to challenge the WBC champion in his homeland.
Results June 5 Mexico City: flyweights- Oscar Arciniega won in the 9th round against Miguel Angel Granados Saturday night. I didn't see the fight, but it was stopped on cuts. Also, mini-fly Jesus Martinez W10 Tomas Rojas; feather Andres Tello KO3 Francisco Dianzo; fly Mario Perez draw4 Jose Luis de la Rosa.
I'm in Texas for the next few weeks but I'll try to post the Mexico City results that I can obtain for all my faithful readers out there. What you can expect is upcoming news about the Texas fight scene. Since Cory Spinks pulled out of his probable knockout loss to Juan Antonio Lopez on the 11th, it now looks like Juan Carlos Rodriguez will challenge the hard-punching Lopez in a 10 round super-lightweight bout. Headlining the show at the Texas Motor Speedway in Ft. Worth will be Danny Romero vs Enrique Jupiter. Romero is a slight favorite in my book, but a Jupiter upset wouldn't surprise me a bit. He's has looked very strong in the gym recently. The Butterbean is also on the card televised by ESPN2 Friday Night Fights. Later this week I'll stop by the gym and check on Paulie Ayala as he prepares for his match with Johnny Tapia
Mexico City lightweight Pedro Alonso Teran 10-1(9) is now training in Texas and looking for action in the month of June. Teran is an aggressive fighter who has solid boxing skills, displays good lateral movement, and throws punishing body shots.
For the record, I'm picking Roy Jones Jr. to stop Reggie Johnson in the 4th round Sat. night. And a decision win for Derrick Gainer over Roberto Garcia.
